Ryne Sandberg and Wade Boggs are the newest inductees into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Boggs is a member of the 3000 club and that is an automatic lock for the HOF. He was a .300+ hitter his whole career. Seven (7) times he had over 200 hits in a season. Boggs hit .368 and had 240 hits in 1985. Not bad. Deserving inductee !
Sandberg was a lifetime .285 hitter. In his 16 year career, he only led the NL in one category. In 1985, had 19 triples which led the NL that year.
I believe Sandberg played during a time where good second baseman were not prevalent. Joe Morgan was at the end of his career, so Rhino really had no competition. He was a 10 time NL All Star and won the MVP in 1984. These aren't exactly HOF numbers, but Rhino was the best at his position in the 80's. I can't really argue too much against him.
Imagine if the Phillies never traded him (1981) ???

I'm a bit biased as a Cubs fan, but Ryno did go some 120 games without a single error, won the gold glove for 2B close to 10 times, and consistently had a high batting average (more importantly, a high OBP each year), and he was almost always among the league leaders in HR each year. His offense is definitely not what makes him a HOFer though, it was his overall contribution to the team in addition to his ridiculously brilliant defense that finally got him inducted after three years on the list. Granted, he might be an "average" HOFer, but he was definitely one of the best 2B ever, and I think that's certainly still true today.
PS: You guys in Philly are punks for taking the series from us this week. Oh well, I love those Cubbies despite their losing ways. Nice blog!
