Shaq should gives Suns the Edge in the NBA West

The Phoenix Suns recognized that they needed a solid post presence to compete with the San Antonio Spurs, as well as the emerging L.A. Lakers. Although the Suns are known for their trademark fast break transition offense, a solid half court game is a necessity when it comes to the NBA playoffs. With that said, the Phoenix Suns completed a blockbuster deal acquiring future Hall of Famer, Shaquille O'Neal from the Miami Heat for perennial All Star, Shawn Marion, and Marcus Banks.

The Suns had to part with one of the NBA's best all-around players in Shawn Marion. His scoring average (15.8 ppg) is down a bit this season, but he is still one of the highest percentage shooters in the NBA and can run the floor better than any forward in the league.

Shaquille O'Neal is closing in on 36 years old and his body is starting to break down. Many claim that the Suns acquired a big man far past his prime.

However I think Shaq is going to be rejuvenated by this deal. The Suns have not had a true center the past few years. Amare Stoudemire has been playing out of position at Center and should be able to benefit by moving to his natural position of Power Forward.

The Suns needed that big man in the middle to neutralize Tim Duncan of the Spurs and the emerging young Laker Superstar, Andrew Bynum. If Shaq can get healthy for the playoffs, his experience and newly found motivation may push the Suns into the NBA finals.

Stay tuned !
