Pat Gillick's first half grade as a General Manager would be a D-. Frankly, that is cutting him a break ! He has done nothing to help this team since his arrival.
Let's review some of his deals.
1) Aaron Rowand for Jim Thome. I'll give him a "B+" for this one. Even though Thome is having a monster year, he would not have fit in w/ the Phils in 2006 due to the emergence of Ryan Howard.
2) Third Baseman, Abraham Nunez is hitting a whopping .111. That is terrible and Nunez hasn't helped the Phillies at all this year. Grade F
3) Shortstop, Alex Gonzalez retired hitting a whopping .100. Grade F.
4) Pitcher Ryan Franklin has been another disappointment. Originally slotted for the #5 starter, he has been relegated to the bullpen and has blown numerous games for the Phillies. Manual lacks the confidence in him and he is now a mop up guy, who can't be trusted in a big game situation. Grade D.
5) David Delucci has been a decent PH for the Phils. Frankly, they should trade Burrell and give Delucci the every day LF slot. Grade B.
6) Pitcher Johann Santana has been hurt all year, but his early season opportunities were terrible. He has a 7.56 ERA. That says it all. Grade D-.
7) Sal Fassano was an adequate pick up as a back up catcher. Due to injuries, Fassano has been forced to play everyday. His .258 BA and 10 RBIs from the Catcher position isn't good enough. Grade C.
Gillick better make some moves prior to the Trade deadline. He has to move one of the corner outfielders (preferably Abreu). He won't get a #1 starting pitcher for Abreu or Burrell, but a relief setup man and a right handed bat (Pinch hitter) is a good path forward.
