Phillies need to sign Ryan Howard to a long term deal

The Phillies need to avoid arbitration with Ryan Howard and negotiate a long term deal. Even though Howard will not be eligible for free agency for another 2 years, the Phils should avoid any "ill feelings" that may arise from an arbitration case.

Howard's camp is looking for a $10 million arbitration figure and the Phillies have countered with $7 million. Ryan's agent has indicated he is better than Albert Pujols at this time of his career. They should be careful comparing Howard to Albert Pujols. Although Howard may have the edge over Pujols in Home Runs hit, his defense and propensity to strike out (major league record of 199 in 2007) are areas the Phils will focus on during arbitration.

I would suggest the two sides agree on a 5 year deal similar to Chase Utley signed last year. Ryan, How about $70 million over 5 years ? That will buy you alot of cheesesteaks !
