The Phillies should keep Jon Lieber throughout Spring training this year for two reasons. First, as an insurance policy if any of the other 5 starters (Myers, Garcia, Moyer,Hamels or Eaton) get hurt. Secondly, another major league team will most likely encounter an injury to one of their starting pitchers and could be willing to give up a quality reliever (preferably a set-up man for Tom Gordon) or a quality outfielder. The Phils are bit thin in the outfield and could use some depth.
Lieber did have a down year last year (9-11, 4.93 ERA), but he is still a proven major league starting pitcher.
The Phillies need to exercise some patience on this one.
