Phillies Grades at the Season Midpoint

The Phillies Grades at the All Star Break :

- Starting Pitching: B. The last 2 weeks, Joe Blanton and J.A. Happ have been outstanding. Cole Hamels has been inconsistent to date.

- Relief Pitching: C-. Brad Lidge and Ryan Madson have been below par all year. The Phillies need these two to get back in last year's form.

- Defense: A. The Phillies defense is the best in the National League. Ryan Howard has taken giant strides as a fisrt baseman.

- Offense: B. Raul Ibanez, Chase Utley and Shane Victorino have had great first halves. Pedro Feliz has been a pleasant surprise. Howard, Werth are right where we'd expect them to be. The Phillies have 2 good Left hand pinch hitters (Dobbs and Stairs). They need a right hand hitter off the bench. Bruntlett just isn't cutting it.

Manager: B+. Charlie Manual has done well, despite inconsistent pitching.

I am reasonably confident that the Phillies will win the National League East Division title.
